In 1891 Germany, where adults hold power, young Wendla questions life's mysteries while her mother silences her curiosity. Meanwhile, the fearless Melchior defends his anxious friend Moritz, who is overwhelmed by puberty and school pressures. As Melchior and Wendla discover a powerful but forbidden desire, Moritz's despair leads to tragedy, with the rigid school system blaming Melchior for his friend’s fate. When Wendla’s unexpected pregnancy is revealed, the young lovers confront a world unwilling to support them. With raw emotion and a powerful score, Spring Awakening captures the highs and lows of rebellion.

DRAMATURGICAL NOTES
“Overthrown At school, at home, by blind men … … Wars are made And somehow that is wisdom Thought is suspect And money is their idol And nothing is okay unless it's scripted in their Bible” - from “All is Known”
The original source material on which this musical is based, Frank Wedekind’s 1890 play Frühlings Erwachen (which has been translated as both The Awakening of Spring and Spring's Awakening), has an oft omitted subtitle: Eine Kindertragödi or A Children’s Tragedy. Both play and musical center youth trapped in the turmoil created by a culture of oppression, repression, and misguided morality. Stella Adler wrote, “The theater was created to tell people the truth about life and the social situation… Your profession is to interpret, and you have to interpret your time. Your time is different than any other.” While the specific truth of Wedekind’s late 19th century Germany differs from the truth of our time, the lyrics above ring true for both eras in which those in power fail to provide truth and security, to act with empathy and consideration of impact, and to put humanity before ideology. The tragic consequences of both are most harshly felt by the youth and other under-served communities.
