Fools Play is back at Tacoma Little Theatre in 2017-2018 for a second consecutive season! Tacoma’s own recurring Improv show every fourth Saturday, 10:30pm each month. Tickets only $10. This Tacoma staple is a must-see.

The cast of Fools Play has two rules: Have Fun, and Don’t Be Afraid. They take those rules and perform two longform improvised stories full of characters, drama, and humor. For 20-40 minutes,inspired by each other and you, we get to inhabit the lives of characters in worlds familiar or strange
for an epic journey or an intimate glimpse. Entirely improvised, we never know what will happen, but we do know we love discovering these stories.

No two stories are ever the same and infinite new stories are just waiting to be found.

 Concessions, including alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase from Tacoma Little Theatre. Show commencement may be delayed if a TLT or another group is using the space prior.

In addition to the regular 4 th Saturday of Each Month Format, keep your eyes peeled for extra performances throughout the season.

Material is unscripted and uncensored. Recommended for mature-minded audiences.

Told from the perspective of six young women who came of age in this enigmatic decade, these young ladies look back on a host of issues ranging from their first Beehive Dance to the challenges we faced as a nation – all accomplished by a vast array of the most celebrated and memorable songs of the era.

Top Girls

Tacoma Little Theatre and Toy Boat Theatre presents a “progressive” staged reading of Top Girls by Caryl Churchill, on Wednesday, April 13, and Thursday April 14, 2016 at 7:30pm.  The production will be directed by Marilyn Bennett.

Top Girls, written in 1982, is British playwright Caryl Churchill’s homage to women who knock on the glass ceiling, yet a cautionary tale about the sacrifices inherent in rising in an oppressive hierarchical society.  Opening with a brilliant, wine-soaked celebratory dinner with five progressive women from history, the play follows Marlene, newly promote to Manager of the Top Girls Agency, through a reckoning with the life (literally) that she gave up to get there.  In this TBT treatment conceived by Marilyn Bennett, the audience will attend the opening dinner scene in TLT’s cabaret-like lobby (food and libation for purchase), then move into the theatre to watch how things develop at the agency, traveling back to the lobby to witness the reunion of Marlene and her sister Joyce, in Joyce’s kitchen.  There will be two 10 minute intervals to transition from space to space.

It's the first day after winter break at East High. The Jocks, Brainiacs, Thespians, and Skater Dudes find their cliques, recount their vacations and look forward to the new year. Basketball team captain and resident jock, Troy, discovers that the brainy Gabriella, a girl he met singing karaoke on his ski trip, has just enrolled at East High. They cause an upheaval when they decide to audition on for the high school musical, led by Ms. Darbus. Although many students resent the threat posed to the "status quo," Troy and Gabriella's alliance might just open the door for others to shine as well.

Tacoma Little Theatre is holding auditions for its holiday production of Scrooge! The Musical, directed by Micheal O’Hara, musically directed by Zachary Kellogg, and choreographed by Eric Clausell. 

Auditions will be held Sunday, September 16th and Monday, September 17th at Tacoma Little Theatre. Audition appointments will be set between the times of 6:00pm-9:00pm on Sunday and 7:00pm-10:00pm on Monday. Callbacks will be held on Wednesday, September 19th.   

This musical, with book, music and lyrics by Leslie Bricusse, is adapted from the 1970 musical film Scrooge which starred Albert Finney and Sir Alec Guinness.  The miserly Ebenezer Scrooge undergoes a profound experience of redemption over the course of a Christmas Eve night, after being visited by the ghost of his former partner Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas past, present and future.

Please prepare at least 16 bars of a song in the style of the show.  Part of the audition may include a cold reading.  Actors of all ethnicities are encouraged to audition.  All roles are available, including roles for youth ages 6 and up.

Christian Carvajal is the managing editor of OLY ARTS, a multi-platform Thurston County publication devoted to the best in local arts and culture. He's the author of Lightfall (2009), a satirical view of the apocalypse as seen from an Oklahoma college town. Last month saw the publication of his sexy novel Mr. Klein's Wild Ride, authored under the pen name Lynn Savage. It tells the story of a marketing exec who agrees to rep a California theme park for swingers. "Carv" is an actor and director who writes feature articles for The Weekly Volcano.

Alec Clayton was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, the youngest of six children and an identical twin. He lived in Tupelo until he was 12, at which time he moved to Hattiesburg, 60 miles from the Gulf-Coast setting of his Freedom trilogy of novels. He earned a master's degree in painting and drawing from East Tennessee State University, then edited a weekly newspaper in New York City, another in Hattiesburg and a statewide literary and arts quarterly, Mississippi Arts & Letters. Since moving to Olympia with his wife Gabi in 1988, Clayton has written and edited for The News Tribune, OLY ARTS and the Weekly Volcano, and he's published eight novels and a book of art criticism.

Melissa Thayer was born during a volcanic eruption and says she's been causing problems ever since. She grew up in Montana and has lived and traveled all over the world. She now resides on the edge of Puget Sound with her husband, child and three cats. She likes to write about people and to connect readers with her characters. Her first novel, The Stories We Don't Tell, was published by Booktrope in 2014.

Harlan Zinck will host the evening and is an active, enthusiastic supporter of theater companies and other arts organizations throughout the Puget Sound region.

A selection of actors, critical and popular favorites all, will perform readings during the second act of the evening: Luke Amundson (The Sluts of Sutton Drive), Gretchen Boyt (The Miracle Worker), Katelyn Hoffman (The Last Night of Ballyhoo), Kait Mahoney (Arcadia), Gabriel McClelland (The Weir), Jed Slaughter (The Underpants).

Tacoma Little Theatre presents Syra Beth Puett’s one-woman show, My Husband Liked Beverly Better, directed by Doug Kerr.  This production will take place on Thursday, September 21, 2017 at 7:30pm.

Join TLT for an evening with local legend, Syra Beth Puett, featuring stories and insights about her life both inside, and outside, of the theatre.  Although the show chronicles her experiences in Community Theatre, it also reveals reasons she became involved in theater. She will introduce people and situations that informed the performer that she became.  Through these insights, you may just discover that she is not the actor, or person, that you thought she was.

Tacoma Little Theatre invites you to join some of Tacoma’s finest actors for an evening of dinner, mystery, and murder presented at and with food by The Social Bar and Grill.

Anything that CAN go wrong, HAS gone wrong aboard the S.S. Amore, a not-so-luxurious honeymoon cruise ship. Captain Giovanni Della Robbia is trying to calm the passengers, with the assistance of the cruise director, Gina. It’s talent night aboard the Amore and Gina recruits audience members to join in the competition. Just when it looks like the cruise won’t be a total disaster, someone is murdered. Suspects include honeymooners, the crew, and Chef Fredo — whose temperament is matched by the large knife he wields. 

Dinner includes: Appetizer, Salad, Main Entrée (Meat, Chicken, Vegetarian/Gluten Free) & Dessert.  Coffee, Tea, Water and Soda are included, and alcohol is available for purchase at the bar or from your server.

HONEYMOON FROM HELL will run October 5-8, 2017.  Thursday-Saturday performances will begin at 7:30pm, and the Sunday performance will begin at 3:00pm.  The event is held at The Social Bar and Grill, 1715 Dock Street, Tacoma, WA.  RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED.

A TASTE OF HONEY - An Off the Shelf reading

Tacoma Little Theatre presents Shelagh Delaney’s, A Taste of Honey, directed by Sara Freeman.  This production will take place on Thursday, December 7, 2017 at 7:30pm.

Shelagh Delaney's visceral working-class drama caused a sensation in England in 1958. Part of a wave of "kitchen-sink" realism, Delaney was the angry young woman writing alongside the wave of novels and plays from "angry young men" like John Osborne and Kingsley Amis. Her unflinching depiction of poverty, lack of education, alcoholism, and broken family ties refused the elegance of drawing room comedies and put a teenage girl struggling with her mother and an unplanned pregnancy at the center of the story. Vicious, funny, fearful, and hopeful, A Taste of Honey pulls no punches about mothers and daughters, absent fathers, dead-end jobs, teenage love affairs, and social prejudice and its depiction of race and sexuality still stings today. This is a juicy play about characters with tart tongue and vulnerable hearts, fighting for every sweetness they can get.

Gillian Holroyd is one of the few modern people who can actually cast spells and perform feats of supernaturalism. She casts a spell over an unattached publisher, Shepherd Henderson, partly to keep him away from a rival and partly because she is attracted to him. He falls head over heels in love with her at once and wants to marry her. But witches, unfortunately, cannot fall in love, and this minute imperfection leads into a number of difficulties before they find out if they can live happily ever after.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
2 WOMEN/3 MEN

Gillian Holroyd (late 20's-early 40's) Intelligent, sophisticated woman who is also a practicing witch. She is the landlord of a Murray Hill brownstone where she, her Aunt Queenie, and Shep Henderson live. Gillian experiences a major personality transformation during the play. 

Shep Henderson (early 30's-early 40's) A gentleman, a successful NY publisher, a hard-working man who is ready to get on with the next phase of a “successful” life…marriage. Despite being under a powerful love spell, Shep occasionally senses that something unorthodox is happening. 

Aunt Queenie Holroyd (mid 40's-mid 50's) Gillian’s Aunt, also a witch, although not as powerful as Gillian. She is slightly eccentric and a bit mischievous. She loves her magic and has fun using it.

Nick Holroyd (early 20's) Gillian’s brother. Charming, bright, with an easy manner and always ready for a party or a prank. Condescending toward mortals, but enjoys their company.

Sidney Redlitch (mid 40's-mid 50's) Author of a book about witchcraft containing just enough truth that it is clear he has some insights into this hidden world. He is an outsider and groupie, who thrives on being “in the know.” He is aware he will never be fully part of the witchy world and that lends him a slight air of desperation. He is always a little rumpled and often a little tipsy.

At a rural fishing Lodge, Froggy, a British demolition expert, has brought along a pathologically shy young man named Charlie who is overcome with fear at the thought of making conversation with strangers. He tells everyone that Charlie is from an exotic foreign country and speaks no English.  Once alone the fun really begins, as Charlie overhears more than he should — the evil plans of a sinister, two-faced minister and his redneck associate; the fact that the minister's pretty fiancée is pregnant; and many other revelations made with the thought that Charlie doesn't understand a word being said. All of that sets up the wildly funny ending.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
2 WOMEN/5 MEN

Charlie Baker - (30s-50s) Charlie is the "foreigner" of the play's title, an Englishman who comes to Georgia for a weekend visit with his friend, Staff Sergeant Froggy LeSueur. Initially, Charlie is extremely shy, dull, and morose as he worries about the apparently imminent death of his philandering wife. A proofreader for an English science fiction magazine, Charlie considers himself "boring" and wonders what it would be like to have a vibrant personality. At the beginning of the play, Charlie is so sad and shy that he doesn't want to speak to anyone. When Froggy introduces him as a "foreigner" who can't speak or understand English, however, Charlie gradually discovers his hidden potential. Overhearing the plot of the Reverend David and Owen Musser to buy Betty's lodge and turn it into a meeting place for the Ku Klux Klan, Charlie ultimately leads Betty, Catherine, and Ellard in a successful fight against these villains. In helping Betty thwart David and Owen's machinations, Charlie discovers leadership skills, love, and the vibrant personality he has always craved. 

Reverend David Marshall Lee - (30s-50s) The Reverend David Marshall Lee is the fiance of Catherine and one of the main villains, along with Owen, in the play. Pretending to be concerned about Betty and her struggling business, David secretly attempts to gain control of her lodge so he can turn it into the Tilghman County headquarters for the Ku Klux Klan. David appears to be friendly, sincere, genuinely decent, kind, and patient, and he is quite canny in carrying out his devious plot. In Act II, however, Charlie's clever taunts subtly reveal David's basic meanness. 

Staff Sergeant Froggy Lesueur - (30s-50s) Froggy is the ebullient demolition expert from the British Army who brings his friend, Charlie Baker, to Georgia for a three-day weekend. In his annual visits to the United States, Froggy has become good friends with Betty Meeks and is genuinely concerned about her welfare. When Charlie pleads for solitude during his brief stay, Froggy is caught between his loyalties to both Betty and Charlie; he hatches the plan to pass Charlie off as a "foreigner." Froggy's plan is for Betty to be charmed by the exotic visitor while Charlie gets his needed peace and quiet

Betty Meeks - (50s or older) A widow, Betty Meeks is the owner and operator of the fishing lodge and resort in which the play takes place. Betty has always dreamed of traveling outside of Georgia and is quite thrilled with the prospect of having a "real, live foreigner" as her guest. Since the death of her husband, Betty has been struggling to keep her resort business alive, unaware of David and Owen's underhanded plot to gain control of it. Betty speaks with a strong Georgia accent. She talks to Charlie, "the foreigner," as if he were deaf, as if speaking louder and slower will facilitate Charlie's understanding. 

Owen Musser - (30s-60s) The racist Owen Musser is a local Georgia man who serves as the henchman for the main villain, the Reverend David Lee. After being named the property inspector for Tilghman County, Georgia, Owen has the authority to condemn Betty's fishing lodge as structurally unsafe, which would force Betty to sell and enable David Lee to purchase the lodge with the money he gains from marrying Catherine. To call Owen "crude" is to indulge in understatement: he is mean-spirited, ignorant, volatile, and extremely prejudiced against anyone who doesn't fit his ideal.

Catherine Simms - (20s-40s) Catherine is staying with Betty at the lodge. She is engaged to the Reverend David Lee, unaware of his true, villainous character. A former debutante and the heiress of a huge fortune, Catherine is bored with life, restless, and unsure of what she wants. When she discovers in Charlie a man who is genuinely kind and really enjoys listening, she believes she has found her ideal romantic mate. Catherine is small in stature and pretty. 

Ellard Simms - (Teens-early 30s) Ellard is Catherine's younger brother and an extremely insecure young man who is considered by others to have an intellectual disability. Shue describes him as "a lumpy, overgrown, backward youth, who spends much of his time kneading something tiny and invisible in front of his chest." Catherine has promised to give Ellard half of their very large inheritance if he shows any signs of mental and social competence. The villainous Reverend David Lee conspires to make Ellard appear stupid in order to maintain control over all of Catherine's money, but during the course of the play Ellard proves to have both moderate intelligence and considerable courage.
 

Auditions for THE VETERANS DAY PROJECT

Tacoma Little Theatre is bringing the poignant and beautiful story, The Veterans Day Project, directed and compiled by Beau Pritchard.   

Auditions will be held Sunday, August 19th and Monday, August 20th at Tacoma Little Theatre. Audition appointments will be set between the times of 6:00pm-9:00pm on Sunday and 7:00pm-10:00pm on Monday. Callbacks if needed will be held on Wednesday, August 22nd.   

The Veterans Day Project is an epistolary play exploring 100 years of Americans at war, told through the letters they have written home. These letters are based on true events and people, but they are fictionalized. The show consists of approximately 25 letters, most solo, but a few are group efforts. 

We are looking for members to expand our ensemble. There are no "named" roles in this play, per se, and there are no leads, cast members will generally read two letters as part of the production. Each letter represents a different individual’s experience at a moment in time. This show will be commemorating and observing Veterans Day 2018, which also represents the 100-year anniversary of Armistice, the end of the first World War.

Please prepare a selected letter available from the TLT website to use as your audition piece.  The letters do not have to be memorized.  TLT auditions are inclusive and are open to everyone of all backgrounds, genders, and ethnicities.  We are looking for six actors to play five young military men (younger than 30), one middle-aged military woman, and one 30-year-old woman.

Once cast, The Veterans Day Project will run from Friday, November 16, 2018 to Sunday, November 18, 2018. 

CASTING:

Men:
We need four or five actors to portray young military men. Your personal gender identification does not matter as long as you are able to credibly portray a male soldier. Due to the diversity of those who serve in the military, we are hoping for individuals from as wide array of backgrounds as possible. We are also looking for performers who can credibly portray younger than 30, as the vast majority of those who serve tend to be.

Women:
We need two actors to portray a roughly middle-aged military woman, and one 30-year-old woman. Your personal gender identification does not matter as long as you can convincingly portray a female soldier. Diverse casting is encouraged, but unlike the men, this role must be convincingly portrayed as OVER 30, probably closer to 40. 

Please prepare the letter of your choice from the samples provided (they do not have to be memorized, but you should get familiar with it). Expect that you may be asked to do it again during your audition. Some of these letters contain content that would be considered R rated due to language, frank discussion of race, sex, etc, and some "locker room" talk as befits the characters and cultures of the time

Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike Auditions

Tacoma Little Theatre is holding auditions for the Tony Award winning Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, by Christopher Durang. This production will be directed by Frank Kohel. 

Middle-aged siblings Vanya and Sonia share a home in Bucks County, PA, where they bicker and complain about the circumstances of their lives. Suddenly, their movie-star sister, Masha, swoops in with her new boy toy, Spike. Old resentments flare up, eventually leading to threats to sell the house. Also on the scene are sassy maid Cassandra, who can predict the future, and a lovely young aspiring actress named Nina, whose prettiness somewhat worries the imperious Masha.

Roles are available for 2 men and 4 women.  Please prepare a 1-2 minute monologue not from the script. 

Auditions will be held Sunday, February 7th and Monday, February 8th at Tacoma Little Theatre.  Audition appointments will be set between the times of 6:00pm-9:00pm on Sunday and 7:00pm-10:00pm on Monday.  Callbacks will be held on Wednesday, February 10th.

The Tenth Muse - Off the Shelf

Tacoma Little Theatre presents The Tenth Muse by Tanya Saracho, on Thursday, January 28, 2016 at 7:30pm.  The production will be directed by Randy Clark.

In a lively 18th-century convent in colonial Mexico, young nuns and servants unearth a hidden play written by Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, a nun and famous intellectual who died 20 years earlier after falling out of favor with the church. At night, behind the back of the Mother Superior, they act out Sor Juana’s ribald farce, revealing her blazing, blasphemous talent...and discovering their own complex bonds of sisterhood.

Featuring the talents of: Tracy Pinero, Jen York, Laurie Sifford, Akua Asare-Konadu, Deanna Martinez, Chevi Chung, Ashley Jackson, and Syra Beth Puett
